I am grateful to know that my eldest brother is celebrating his birthday today. Today, he turns 43.
Although people may not see him as a "successful person," he has been incredibly kind and helpful to me. We have not lived with our parents since I was eight. I still remember how he adjusted his college schedule so he could drop me off and pick me up from school.
I also remember how he supported my education, constantly motivating me not to give up. He picked up my report card and accompanied me to get my high school exam results—and that was my first failure. At that time, he said:
"It’s okay to fail this time. Haven't you always succeeded before? Maybe this is how Allah is showing you what it feels like to not get what you want. It's okay to feel sad, but we have to rise again. You are still great—it’s just not the right place for you."
He taught me how to view failure. That was my first life lesson as I transitioned into adolescence and adulthood.
Among the four of us, he has always been the one ready to take care of our parents. He diligently studied religion and became a devoted Muslim. He was the one who introduced me to Islamic magazines and books.
He always made sure I got to work safely, no matter where I worked for the first time. He took me to Batang, Lampung, and many other places. Now, he is always ready to take care of my children. Whenever they get sick, he is the one who takes them to the hospital.
When I was pregnant and gave birth, he stayed with me and was even willing to massage my tired feet and back.
O Allah, protect my brother, bless his age, and guide him in obedience and goodness.
Even if the world looks down on him, my brother is one of the most important people in my life. Thank You, Allah, for choosing me to be his sibling.
